Thanks Maureen. Yes, I used my studio light with a brolly box.

Very nice photo with complimenting colors. I think you have a photo within the photo - consider a crop showing the top third of the picture...
By ktapio (2008-08-29 05:06:56)
Did you photograph this photo recently? I can not believe this tree is still standing I took a shoot so similar to that in Arches National Park 27 years ago. I am glad to know that people respect nature and let it survive in some places. katia

Thanks for your feedback - good suggestion. I could use more time for post processing... :-)
Took a look at some of your pictures - very nice portraits!

Hi Maureen, Thanks so much for your time! The total size of the image will be 16x20 and I would like to place this image somewhere compositionally on the 16x20 and accent the image with an accent line. I hope I am not confusing you because I am. LOL I know there is a name for it... I know it has something about if you draw a line from the upper right and left corner the intersection of the Y should be on the eye. I'm sorry I have CRS disease. Thanks again!!!!!

Thanks Linda, I was not sure I would make it in time for the assignment.. still have some nice images from the trip I will share them on the critique page.. katia

It is not very conmen where we live to see camels as we go in the open desert it is more likely to see big groups some times. I do take advantage of those rare moments to get something….. still waiting for that great shot.. Maybe I will get it someday. thanks you. katia

One can not help but slow down when seeing the herd of camels moseying down the high way as if we are trespassing on their property their birth rights. Thank you for the feed back. katia

I wrote down the notes you suggested next time we are on the road I am going to try it.. I take a lot of pictures from the moving car in this environment. It is not really very accepted to see a woman taking pictures in public. I am not sure if it is against the law but I am not going to find out either. I want to try using my new 70 200 lens I am still learning how too and if it would be easy to do while in a car too.. we will see. There is so much to learn and remember. Thanks again for your thoughtful suggestion. katia

This is really very beautiful! I'm not sure if you are asking how you technically place (or resize) this image to a 16X20 or how it should be done compositionally. Also are you asking how to create an accent line around the actual image or an accent line within a framed area. What size is this image?
By maureenyoung52 (2008-08-29 04:12:04)
VERY pretty! Love the lighting of the eye and the pose. Was she sitting in the shade and you set up your studio lights?

Hi Carl.
The framing, toning and the sense of abandonment, all create a dramatic mood. Another terrific and well staged portrait.

Thanks for your comments, everyone! I would have preferred not to have the sun where it was, but it couldn't be helped. I like to go there for breakfast so the sun is usually in about the same spot whenever I'm there. I had a polarizing filter attached but there was still a lot of glare. There was also a fair bit of sand still in the air from the big storm that had been in the area for a few days, which was also scattering light (and sand-blasting any arms sticking out of car windows-ouch!)
By photobee72 (2008-08-29 02:54:02)
If this was my baby... I would have bought them all too! Absolutely adorable. The bears arm closest to the light is a bit distracting, when I opened the image that is the first thing that caught my eye. Overall this is very creative and that baby is so cute!!!!!! Great Job!!!!

I really like this image! I have been looking at it all day. I really love the deep colors in the rocks and the sky is perfect. I really like how you have framed the tree with the rocks. Since the main subject was the tree... I feel that it should have been the lightest area but everything else is just beautiful.

This is a super capture, the road is a great compositional element. I think the DOF is really good and the scene has lots of layers.

Oi Ivo.
You don't have to feel embarassed. We are all here for learning and having fun. What I learned is that you can convert from RAW to JPEG if you are not thinking to edit the image in a software (like PS or other), I mean: when the intention is just to upload to the web or to send to a shop for printing. The losses will not be noticed. If your intention is to edit it, then is better to convert to TIFF and only in the end of the process to resize it and convert for the Web in JPEG (PS has this optimizing function). I think the problem is to shoot digitally in BW. Usually, acording to my experience, you'll get better results shooting and editing in color RGB and then converting to BW. For this you have to use a software (like PS or other) and you will have much more flexibility for a better result in grayscale.

Stunning! I don't have much to add. I'm sure there is hope on both sides of the camera. What grade is she in? My 6 year old just started first grade this year. <sniff>
By littlepeanut (2008-08-29 01:47:37)
Stunning! I'm speechless. The colors... I'd love to know of any PS work you did, if you don't mind sharing. Your advice, as well as others on PWS, is always so helpful.
By karmal (2008-08-29 01:43:56)
Thank you Carl. Now, with your help, I also see that distracting element. Another nit pick (we can also criticize our own pictures, can we ?) is the fact that the yellow light of the late afternoon was lost in the "darkroom" process. Maybe I shouldn't have desaturated so much the original skin tones.

This fulfills the assignment nicely. Great focus. I'd work with color selection and try to tone down the reds, blues, and greens to get rid of the colors on the banner. You can also try the dodge and burn tools to darken the banner and lighten the woman. I'm still working on my ps skills as well, but those are things that I might try. Not saying they'd work. ;)
By littlepeanut (2008-08-29 01:31:12)
I like how you've positioned Rocky on the left, while he's looking towards the right and out of view. Light is handled nicely. It's hard taking a picture while pointing towards a bright window.
By littlepeanut (2008-08-29 01:26:34)
I think it's great, katia. DOF looks good to me. This is a stronger image than the other, to me, b'c of the curve in the road, and how it disappears out of sight. It looks brutal out there.
By karmal (2008-08-29 01:24:16)
Thank you Katia for your insightful vision. I guess this was a shot with unintended consequences: you just made me to see the symbolism of it. And I also thank you for that.

Thank you Julie. This was shot under the harsh light of midday. The wide angle and the square frame made the worker smaller than he was. I was "seeing" the scene in BW, but after I also liked the color version.

Great shot, your right "one" picture just does not tell the story. This is a very unique place with many items and limited allowable angles to shot from, you did well.
By JSchultz (2008-08-29 00:53:25)
I like how you capture the camel walk down such a lonely highway, hope the car did not hit him. I think the image could be stronger if the car was not there

Bea I find this photograph also beautifuk, for new and old members it can be learnful for all us, that You nuanced You comment. You are a great photgrapher and every one has an other view on the things. Friendly from John.

Great image I like the reflection on the water, the building to the left seem not quite as sharp
By DougWilkening (2008-08-29 00:47:33)
It's a clever idea. However, I really think that the only way to evaluate advertizing is to count the customers that it brings in. So give it a try and see if it works for you.
By janith (2008-08-29 00:28:29)
Since your shutter was at 1/2500, you could probably have gone up a few f-stops without getting too much blur and it would increase the DoF. But it's all experimentation, right?
By MartyFuchs (2008-08-29 00:28:05)
thanks-i did get a number of shots this close-it does take patience-but it pays
By dianasanzone (2008-08-28 23:36:28)
Thanks for your comments, Dawn. These moments are few and far between for us since I live in Brooklyn, NY and she's been living in Fort Collins, CO.

Thank you, James. I think the "strap" you're referring to is part of her blouse. I looked at your crop, which is one that I had considered, but I went with the one that showed a hint of her breasts.
it is still nice to come and look at it again. katia
